Relics of the Sea is a sculptural still life inspired by ancient amphorae discovered on the ocean floor after shipwrecks.

For centuries, merchant ships transported wine, oil, and grain across vast trade routes using ceramic vessels tightly stacked in the belly of the ship. When these ships were lost at sea, their cargo often remained preserved beneath sand and mineral deposits — discovered hundreds of years later exactly as it was packed.

This painting reimagines that moment of rediscovery.

Layers of heavy texture mimic erosion, saltwater patina, and mineral buildup, allowing the amphorae to emerge from the canvas as if excavated. Warm terracotta tones blend with ash, stone, and oxidized browns, creating a palette rooted in earth and history.

Rather than depicting vessels, this piece aims to feel like an artifact — a fragment of a story resurfacing after centuries underwater.
